Best NHL Fights This Week

Thanks to the boys at Punch Drunk Love, we have this epic compilation of this week's (10/7-10/13) top 5 fights in the NHL. I'm not going to embed all the videos (click the link if you want, don't be lazy), but I will put up the best of the top 5, & boy was it the best.

Tanner Glass of the Pittsburgh Penguins squared off on October 8, 2013 with Carolina Hurricane's Jay Harrison. Now Tanner is not much of an enforcer, in fact he isn't at all. He's just a solid 4th liner much like Jay, but boy did they go at it:

Great K.O. A lot of good punches thrown & a lot of good movement. But like always, this leads me down the road of, "should fighting still be allowed in hockey?"

The tradition of fighting in hockey is something that should not be tampered with. You cannot compare the fighting in baseball (bench clearing craziness with bats) or football (thugs swinging helmets & stomping cleats) to the subdued, gentlemanly ballet that is a hockey fight. There are an unwritten set of rules in a hockey fight that are not present in sports that don't allow it. With that, it makes the fighting safer & more meaningful when you are trying to swing the feel of the game in your favor.

Whatever, great fight & check out the link up top from Puck Drunk Love or click here!

George Parros Taken to Hospital After Slip-&-Fall Accident Opening Night

Tough guy George Parros of the Montreal Canadiens tripped & fell last night during a fight with Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Cotlton Orr:

Parros is a tough guy but he met his match with that shiny sheet of ice (which can be unforgiving from time to time). Those who speculate that this is the reason why fighting should be revised in the NHL are not making a reasonable judgement call. This is hockey, not basketball or soccer. When a bunch of grown men in pads & sticks skate around at 30 mph hitting each other, theres going to be a fight.

It's tradition, and just because George had a "spaz" moment & busted his face on the ice doesn't mean that tradition must be re-made for the sake of safety. Let them play.

Adding to the List: Another Epic Hockey Fight!

So this fight broke out apparently over the weekend & boy is it a doozy. According to Holdout Sports, this tussle occurred in the North American Hockey League & is by far one of the best this year:

Here's the original story: Here's two hockey players fighting...without throwing a single punch (Video)

Ryan Hutchinson Throws Chair After Being Ejected

So it's been a couple days without any recent news due to sicknessbut thanks to Yardbarker & Diehard Sports we have something. Ryan Hutchinson of the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League for fair-weathered fans) had a melt-down after a fight the other night that ruined his future soccer career & ultimatley branded some kid as a sissy for the rest of his life. At around the 20 second mark of the video we see a man ON ICE with SKATES trying to kick a helmet (like if I didn't know the end to that story). But it gets better! Around the 35 second mark, Hutchinson scares the spine out of who I like to call now "sissy kid":

Ryan, I know that fight got you angry, but c'mon...No reason to go around making kids look like sissies!

Russian Referee Fights Player

This footage is gold, gold I tell you! There seems to be a lot less rules in Russia, or at least a lot more fearless referees. The video below is a match between a referee & a player on ice at a game. It seems like something ruffled the feathers of the play & he gave a stiff cross-check to the referee. But what he didn't know was that in Soviet Russia, referee fights you!:

I love how he didn't even hesitate to take off his helmet & start the fight. The player to me should be in much bigger trouble for initiating the fight and also hitting an on ice official. The ref should get minor retaliation punishment for defending himself. Too funny, Go Russia...

Violence is not the Answer in Paradise

Ok so today I’m a little ticked off. This Independence Day weekend was both exhilarating and disappointing. I spent this weekend in Key West, having a great time (or at least to the best of my knowledge). Besides the fact I walked 6 miles from Downtown to Stock Island just to get a bed to sleep in I became a little confused about the local population. I have tremendous respect for all the locals in Key West and I applaud them for such a spectacular weekend (I myself have family living in Key West).

The only real thing that ticked me off was on the night of July 3rd. After spending a great night with my 16 year old cousin, (who is in fact a local and a student at Key West High) we decided to hit Duval and see downtown. What I saw was incredible. A group of local kids (17 years old, about four in total) got themselves in a scuffle with a tourist who must have been in his 30’s. Next thing I knew there were screams and that same tourist was laying on his back while the four local boys were stomping on him.

After they were finished they scattered and weren’t seen again. I told my cousin that this wasn’t appropriate and he chuckled, which showed me how the young local population in Key West admire violence. They look up to the older guys that fight as well as to their peers when they get into squabbles. At the end of the night I gave my cousin a lecture on the seriousness of the actions that had occurred (and I’m no one to lecture, just look at the title of the blog). I told him about the dangers of doing that where I live in Miami (next thing you know you’re in county jail or worse, staring down the barrel of a gun). My advice to everyone else? Keep away from the young locals in Key West, unless you want a problem.

Just an example of what happens in Miami at a regular house party.
